It’s no secret that coconut oil has amazing health benefits; one of which is the ability to help you burn fat! Coconut oil is thermogenic which means that it generates heat thereby speeding up your metabolism and increasing your energy expenditure. Several studies show that just by adding coconut oil to your diet, you can lose fat, especially the “dangerous” fat in the abdominal cavity.
How exactly does coconut oil burn fat?
Whereas most foods contain predominantly long-chain fatty acids, coconut oil consists almost entirely of Medium Chain Fatty Acids. The thing with these medium chain fatty acids, is that they are metabolized differently than the longer chain fats. Unlike other fats which are stored, they are sent straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are either used for energy right away or turned into ketone bodies. Coconut oil also has a significant amount of lauric acid which is a potent antimicrobial agent. This medium-chain fatty acid is known to increase total cholesterol levels in the body. Of course that sounds like a bad thing but this increase, however, is largely in the so-called good cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL). By increasing HDL levels, lauric acid may help support cardiovascular health.
Coconut oil can help decrease your appetite
Many studies on medium chain fatty acids show that, compared to the same amount of calories from other fats, they increase feelings of fullness and lead to an automatic reduction in calorie intake. In one study of 6 healthy men, eating a high amount of MCTs caused them to automatically eat 256 fewer calories per day. In another study of 14 healthy men, those who ate MCTs at breakfast ate significantly less calories at lunch.
The best way to incorporate coconut oil into your diet is obviously through cooking. If you are a fan of recipes which call for butter, just swap that butter for coconut oil! You can also incorporate it into your smoothies. I personally love a berry coconut concoction- all you need is a cup of any berries of your choice, ice cubes, a cup of milk, and of course a tablespoon of coconut oil!
